Building Credit from Scratch for a Mortgage

No credit history? No problem. Here's how to establish credit so you can qualify for a home loan.

No credit history can be almost as frustrating as bad credit. But you have options.

Where to start

  • Secured credit card: You put down a deposit (usually $200-500), and that becomes your credit limit. Use it for small purchases, pay it off every month. After 6-12 months, you'll have a credit score.
  • Become an authorized user: As mentioned above, getting added to someone else's well-managed card gives you their payment history.
  • Credit-builder loan: Some credit unions and online lenders offer loans specifically designed to build credit. The money sits in an account while you make payments, then you get it back at the end.
  • Rent reporting services: Services like RentReporters and LevelCredit report your on-time rent payments to the credit bureaus. If you've been paying rent on time for years, this gives you credit for it.

Timeline to a mortgage-ready score

  • Month 1: Open a secured card or get added as an authorized user.
  • Month 6: You'll likely have a FICO score around 680-720.
  • Month 12-18: With consistent payments, you can be over 740.

The "no credit" mortgage option

FHA allows manual underwriting for borrowers with no credit score. You'll need alternative credit references (rent, utilities, insurance, phone bills). It's more paperwork but it works.

Bottom line: If you have no credit, don't wait. Open a secured card today. You can be ready to buy in 12-18 months.
